Dental surgery is needed when there is disease, damage or injury, or disorders of the teeth, gums and surrounding soft tissues. Procedures are often done in an outpatient surgery center or hospital because general anesthetic and a short recovery period is required.

Many dental surgeries or injury repair require a stillness and cooperation that can be hard to come by with small or nervous children. There are many reasons one may need dental surgery. Accidents like falls can cause teeth to loosen or break, requiring surgery to either re-implant the tooth or to stabilize the tooth; or an accident may cause a person to become injured around lips, gums, or cheeks. Infections or abscessed teeth may require surgery as well to either extract a sick tooth or to repair an infected or abscessed area.
